Slow Goin'

I'm now gainfully* employed at GE. I think the job will be fun, but it's not what I want to be doing in 6 months.

I've been toying with the idea of going back to school for a second degree in Secondary Education: English. I'd love to be a teacher so I can make a difference (that's what I liked about my previous job with Equipping Youth), but primarily so I can spend summers with my daughter rather than sending her off to day care.

My idea of a "dream job" has changed several times since I decided what I wanted to be when I grew up: an artist, a neurosurgeon, an architect, a television/radio producer, a psychologist, a writer, a museum curator, a spin-doctor, a genetic researcher, an event coordinator, a healthcare lobbyist, and an educator (in that order).

I don't necessarily want to make loads of money, but I want to be fairly compensated. I don't want to be a cog in the machine - to make money for the sake of making money. I want to enjoy what I do and know it's best for me and my daughter in terms of a balance between time and income. I need advice. Do you have any?

*Gainfully employed: I'm employed, but the "gainful" part is in question...

Yikes! The evil empire! haha
Actually, I heard several people say that they liked it out there. I had even applied out there at one point but at the time they had a hiring freeze.

I really like the idea of making a difference. It is important because it offers fulfillment. The unfortunate thing about a lot of those jobs is that they don't pay nearly enough......

Congrats on the job at GE though. I like their cafeteria. Good luck finding a good parking spot!

Can you take night courses to help reach your goal of being a teacher? I know it would mean more time away from Maddie......

Would you still want to teach if classes were in session all year?

Peach: GE isn't bad, but it's not what I want in the long-term. The parking isn't bad and the cafeteria is a nice perk. I plan on taking night courses if I choose to earn a new degree.

Mike: Maddie is more important to me than any career... or any impact my career would have on others. However, should I choose to teach, I would opt for a typical "summer break" school so I could parent her and spend the precious little time I have with her while she's young. If classes were in session all year, I'd enroll her in a school with a similar schedule. I think this is a non-issue.

What kind of position do you have other there? Similar to your other leasing experience?

I mentioned that about the parking lot because it used to be crammed all of the time and you would have to come early to get a decent spot.

My position at GE is that of a Collector/Cash-Apps/CS for the IKON team... which is a total mess since GE bought their finance department. I have to walk the national sales reps through a winning philosophy that helps them keep their customers despite back-end problems with their leases... because it costs less to keep your customers (you know the game).
